Dear Reader,
Welcome to the Commander's Report. In case we haven't been introduced, I'm Commander Emilie.
If you're new to my space or we've not been in contact for a while, this last sentence may leave you perplexed. Before your imagination runs wild and you wonder if I have joined the army or undergone some rigorous training that culminated in an official title, the answer is no.
So what's this Commander business all about?
If you've been keeping up with the news recently or engaging in conversation, you might have detected a general aroma of powerlessness.
Whether it's war between countries, the state of our children's education, or where our tax money goes, it's really easy to feel inconsequential and at the mercy of other people's behaviour.
Your work environment and your personal family life can often leave you questioning how much impact you truly have on your life. Add in our dependencies on the weather, the hours of daylight in our day, and the phases of the moon, and it seems miraculous that anyone could feel in command of anything at all.
The truth is, that's not what we signed up for.
Feeling frustrated, dissatisfied, and subject to other people's dubious decisions doesn't quite seem like the type of adventure anyone would willingly enroll in. Humanity's pursuit of happiness seems to be failing, as the joy we experience is directly linked to the level of satisfaction we derive from life.
Powerlessness is on the opposite end of the spectrum from any form of satisfaction.
Humans need to feel relevant and hold the leading role in their own lives to have a sense of belonging and empowerment. Regaining our individual power doesn't happen through bossing people around, cancelling free will, or campaigning for a new world order.
It's a much more personal affair.
Although our society would like to pretend otherwise, we don't live in a world of absolutes. Everyone's perception and understanding of life are relative to their own story and situation. Someone who has lived through a war will view life in a very different light than someone who was home-schooled in a peaceful suburban home.
There is no one-size fits all; there is only the size that fits you.
To find the size that's yours, you need to take command and become the centre of your own world. This is more than a metaphor. While humanity acknowledges that the Earth is not the centre of the universe, it remains the vantage point from which we build our understanding of the universe as well as the most crucial planet for us to nurture. The same is true for each individual born into this world. We ought to be our own top priority. What's right and good for the next person is not necessarily what's best for you, and that's absolutely ok.
Find out what makes you tick, what feeds your soul, and discover what brings you joy.
The answer to that will be different for everyone. And that's the beauty of it.
If you noticed, the previous image displays the same scenery. What's different in this one is that the main character intentionally chooses where to focus. Instead of being drowned in the noise, the traffic, and the chaos, he focuses on the blue sky, the trees, the vibrant colors, the aliveness of the environment, the diversity of transport modes, etc.
That's what the word Commander represents.
What you're in command of is where you focus, which in turn impacts what you emit into the world. It gives you a choice in how you respond to it.
The term Commander is not a traditional label to add status to your name. It's a commitment to yourself and a way of being. It's a lens through which the world can make sense to you. It's your lens.
We've been trained to see life through the eyes of others and not to worry about what's simmering in our own inner world. That's where it needs to change. There should be no separation, no mask, and no division between what we think and how we behave in everyday life.
Embodying your Commander self is not simply about becoming a happier, more fulfilled you; that's just the side benefit. Commanders want to be active participants in the game of life and leave their unique footprint on the masterpiece of existence.
To excel at this, you have to stop filtering yourself to comply with the status quo and start dancing to the rhythm of your own drum. The mastery is doing it without stepping on other people's toes.
